The Mt. Sterling Main Street Program began in 1987 and is a part of the Kentucky Main Street Program, the oldest in the nation. Mt. Sterling has also met the criteria to be designated a Renaissance Kentucky City and the local program is a member of the National Main Street and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The basics of the Main Street Program are designed to improve all aspects of the downtown district, producing tangible and intangible benefits. The purpose of the Main Street Program is to improve the quality of life by strengthening the downtown as the center of the community through concentrated efforts in organization, promotion, design and economic restructuring.
