Our Mission
The Montgomery County Animal Shelter's mission is
providing animal care and protection services for Montgomery County. The
Montgomery County Fiscal Court
operates Montgomery County Animal Shelter (MCAS), an open-admission
shelter that is home to lost and surrendered pets. We foster the
human-animal bond by protecting the safety and welfare of Montgomery
County's animals and citizens. MCAS is committed to providing humane
care to companion animals; reuniting lost pets with their owners;
adopting pets to loving homes; enforcing animal control ordinances; and
proactively educating the public about animals, their needs, and MCAS's
critical role as a community resource.
The Montgomery County Animal shelter does not handle wildlife incidents. For help regarding these situations, please
contact the
Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources at 859-498-8720.

How long does the Montgomery County Animal Shelter hold an animal?
We hold canines for at least six days in an effort to reunite them with the rightful owner. Felines have no stray hold time
and are immediately adoptable.
Why should you spay/neuter your pet?
According to the Humane Society of the
United States, an estimated 6 to 8 million dogs and cats enter U.S.
shelters each year. Fifty percent (50%) of these animals (3-4 million)
are euthanized because there are not enough homes for them. That is one
every eight seconds! As tremendous as the problem of pet
overpopulation is, it can be drastically improved if each of us takes
one small step: spaying/neutering our pets. Spay/neuter surgery is
commonly and routinely performed every day.
Here are the top 10 reasons to spay/neuter your pet:
- It helps dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives by preventing certain types of cancers.
- It helps to prevent behavioral problems.
- It makes pets less likely to roam the neighborhood, run away, be injured, or get into fights.
- It helps keep pets and communities safer by preventing animal bites and aggression.
- It helps prevent pet overpopulation by ensuring no more unwanted animals are born.
- It helps to prevent your pet from spraying or marking, which can ruin furniture and carpeting.
- It eliminates female pet heat cycles, reducing constant crying and nervous behavior.
- It makes life easier on you and your pet--no headaches caring for animals in heat or caring for offspring, rehoming them, etc.
- Helps homeless animals have a better chance of find their forever
home. Think you want to breed to "keep your bloodline alive?" Only one
dog out of most litters will stay in its first home for its entire
life. Most end up in the shelter system (30% of surrendered dogs are
purebreds).
- Saves you money. Spay/neuter surgery is highly-cost effective, and
it is a lot less than the cost of caring for a litter. It also beats
the cost of treatment when your unneutered male escapes and gets into
fights with the neighborhood stray!

vaccinations.
